Outfit log: All About the Sock Bun

Happy Fridaaaaaaaaaay! I'm very happy the week is closing out. All the fun the last two weekends apparently caught up with me, because I've been battling some weird coughing situation all week. I was trying to convince myself it was allergies, but I think not! Looking forward to some rest this weekend, but also want to cry a bit because I'm not sure if I'll be up to dancing this weekend. And it's the once a month ladies and friends night on Saturdaaaaaay!

Though I've attempted the sock bun in the safety of my own home, I'd never had the guts to rock it in public until last month. I gotta say, I felt a wee bit self-conscious with such a different hairdo, but at the same time super glamorous! Like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Another perk to this 'do was having all my hair off of my neck/face, freeing me from my daily combat with wind and bag straps; so splendid. I'm totally gonna rock a sock bun again!

In fact, I may have rocked it again the very next day! Though a slightly different variation. You'll see next week. I know... you can't wait! Hair is so exciting.

Boy howdy! I have just been a busy woman these last couple of weekends... all good stuff. This last weekend was San Francisco Pride, and I just had a freakin' hoot! Spent all day at Dolores Park on Saturday picnicking with a fantastic group of new dancin' friends, then spent all day and evening on Sunday dancing my ass off. The sun was shining and it was just glorious. Ahhhh...

Outfit log: Brown & Blue

Howdy, friends! I hope you're having a lovely week. Mine is going rather well, mostly because I'm still buzzing from the wonderfulness of this past weekend with my mom. We had such a great time! Dancing, shopping, mani/pedi-ing, going through my closet (OMG she is the best), and eating so much deliciousness. I miss her already, but should be going out her way in August... so I'm looking forward to that!

Occasion: Workin' it, May 23rd

In the meantime, I'm still regrouping from spending the weekend running around the Bay Area, and it's only a few days until SF Pride weekend! Oh boy... I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with good stuff... there are just so many events I want to attend (ahem, many involving country dancing) and different groups of friends I want to hang out with! And then there are the chores I need to get done at some point... laundry, cooking for next week, running donation stuff to Out of the Closet (and going through my shoes). Hermione's time turner would really come in handy right about now. Or maybe not having to go to work? I'll take either :)

Oh, also! An outfit from a few weeks ago. I haven't worn this skirt in many moons, but found adding some brown/beige accents gave it new life.

Outfit log: Wide Leg Pants

This is one of my favorite pants-based silhouettes: wide-leg on bottom with a fitted top.

The look may be lacking color, however it still felt like a look, ya know? Versus how I used to wear pants... not really caring so much about the overall composition. 

Anyway! I'm the happiest chick in the world at the moment because not only do I get to go to a reunion today of a bunch of new babies and their parents that I helped out (not as a doula, more like as a concierge for the hospital), but then afterwards my mom arrives in town for the weekend!!

Outfit log: Chicharra

I wore this outfit country dancing (obviously) a few weeks ago, and a gentleman I was dancing with recognized the bug hanging from my necklace. He asked if it was a chicharra, rolling his Rs gorgeously, and he was right, since cicada = chicharra en español.

I'm not usually one to don very edgy accessories, but the cicada reminds me of summers in DC in high school and college, and man do I miss those warm summer nights and the associated buzzing sounds of cicadas and the twinkling of lightning bugs and yes, the humidity. It's pretty shitty during the day, but hot and humid summer nights are my very favorite.

So, since I can't have hot summer nights where I live now, I instead pay homage to such through this fantastic necklace. And it's turned out to be quite the conversation starter too, which is handy since I've been meeting a lot of new people lately. 

Outfit log: Colorful Patterned Tights

Though you can barely see the splashes of floral that adorn the tights in these pictures (better pics here), trust that they're there... orange and red petals with green leaves. 

Occasion: Workin' it, May 17th

I absolutely love colorful patterned tights. They make getting dressed such a breeze! For this look all I did was pull out the red in the tights' flowers by adding on the necklace over my favorite sweater dress. Easy peasy, y'all.

It's weird to post these pics from a few weeks ago, as this past weekend was absolutely gorgeous and warm. I'm sure I'll get back to tights soon, though!

Outfit log: Leopard Love

If you are skeptical about the fantastic-ness of leopard print (or cheetah).. behold this outfit. I mean, how could you not like it? The leopard is understated, but interesting, and provides the means of mixing brown and black in the rest of the ensemble. Plus... it's sassy! And there's nothing I love more than a little sass in my wardrobe. Which is why I'm including even more photos than usual :)

This post feels a bit silly and self-important (ooooh, look at how fantastic my outfit is!), but someone recently told me they didn't dig leopard print and I just cannot stop myself from promoting it shamelessly in response! I know it comes in and out of popularity, however the fact that it keeps coming back just proves that it's a classic. Ya dig?

I Made Food: Black Bean & Couscous Salad with Sautéed Veggies

Soooo... something has come over me. And I made food again this weekend. I think it's following Adulting and UFYH... I keep doing responsible shit. Like grocery shopping and making food for the week, and cleaning my apartment. So... here is a portion of the fruits (well, veggies) of my labor this weekend:

Black Bean & Couscous Salad with Sautéed Veggies

So delicious and nutritious! I used this recipe, but couldn't find quinoa at Safeway (what the frack?), so substituted wheat couscous and left out the tomato because it's not my favorite (leftover pickiness from childhood).

Again, I post this personal feat not because I think I've done something unique or original (hello, I followed a recipe), but instead to inspire others out there who struggle to cook for themselves... especially single peeps like moi, because if I could do it YOU could do it! Leftovers of this stuff and the 17 bean soup I made are way better lunches and dinners than frozen entrees, burritos (okay, maybe not burritos. I love burritos. Maybe I should MAKE burritos!), and frozen pizza... which are my usual go-tos during the week. Plus, I've noticed I'm saving moolah... which is another thing I'm trying to get all responsible about.

Outfit log: The Twirlier The Better

My hands-down favorite part of country dancing is being twirled around the dance floor, which is only made more awesome by skirts with lots of twirlability. Since I was a little girl I've been attracted to twirly skirts so finding a venue that allows me to flaunt 'em makes my inner child so freaking happy!

I picked this floral number up at Out of the Closet. I believe it's handmade, has the cutest little floral print, and is a full circle skirt, meaning optimal twirling capability :) Yeehaw!

How many times can I mention twirling in a post? I think you get my point. Twirling = my favorite.

Outfit log: Finally Friday

Woohoo! Friday already! Damn, short weeks are the best. Especially back to back like I just had (having taken last Friday off, what what). Anyway, I'm psyched for this weekend. There will be lots of country-western dancing and beyond that... we shall see!

I found this dress at the Alameda Point Antique Faire back in like November, and only actually wore it out a few weeks ago. I freaking love this dress so much... it fits me perfectly and the crocheted bits are just lovely. To let it stand out on it's own I kept accessories simple with neutral pieces, and left off a necklace.
